Every year, a batch of new cruise ships is launched, drawing much attention. While the pandemic slowed the launch of new ships in the market due to the public health crisis, 2023 has seen the industry back in action. This year many cruise lines, including Oceania, Celebrity, Regent Seven Seas and Virgin Voyages, are unveiling the most eco-friendly vessels yet.

Cruising is not known to be the most eco-friendly mode of transportation. Still, with technological advances and firm climate commitments, cruise lines are releasing environmental friendships. This means cruisers can enjoy their vacation knowing that the cruise lines are making reasonable efforts to reduce their footprint.

Here is a list of the most exciting cruise ships launching in 2023:

Celebrity Ascent from Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity Ascent is the fourth ship in the Celebrity Cruises award-winning Edge Fleet, and it is as impressive as all the other ships on the fleet. With a speciality restaurant by the Legendary Chef Daniel Boulud and the space designed by Kelly Hoppen, the ship is estimated to hold over 3,200 passengers.

Its Retreat is reserved for suite guests with its restaurant and multi-level sundeck with a pool and lounge. If you book any of the Edge Villa, you get to dip in your outdoor pool. The Celebrity Ascent debuts in December in the Caribbean.

The ship is said to consume 20 per cent less fuel when compared to other lines from previous generations. It can reduce emissions at the port by connecting to the shore power when available. Celebrity Ascent is also part of the fleet-wide ‘zero-waster’ goal.  Eighty-five per cent of the line’s waste is repurposed, recycled or sent to a waste-to-energy facility.

MSC Euribia From MSC Cruises

The MSC Euribia is a 6,327 ship that is environmentally focused. The ship is decorated with huge underwater scenes, including the ‘save the sea’ hashtag. Guests will get to lounge at the five pools. One pool is large enough to accommodate 1,000 people.

If you want to be in a more intimate surrounding, you can splurge on the MSC Yacht Club section, where you can access the dedicated pool and sundeck, bars, restaurants and lounges. The ship launches on June 2023 and will first be said to the Norwegian fjords.

The cruise line has laid a framework for zero emissions by 2050. On top of that, MSC cruises fleet runs on the cleaner-burning liquefied natural gas (LNG). The MSC Euribia features an advanced water system that ensures no water leaves the ship without meeting the highest environmental standards.

Norwegian Viva from Norwegian Cruise Line

The 3,219-passenger Norwegian Viva is debuting in August 2023. It is the second ship in the new class of upscale ships from the Norwegian Cruise Line. It is designed for cruisers who want to engage in many activities without being in a crowd.

The ship features a separate complex for guests, a multi-million-dollar art collection, and many dining options. The Norwegian Viva has integrated top-notch technology that filters out 98 per cent of the sulfur oxides and up to 90 per cent of the Nitrogen oxide emissions. The ship also has an advanced water treatment system that handles all the wastewater produced.

Resilient Lady from Virgin Voyages

The adults-only cruise line Virgin Voyages is debuting its third ship on May 2023. The 2,770-passenger Resilient Lady is debuting in the Mediterranean. The ship does not accommodate kids, meaning you can expect to engage in super fun activities around the pool and indoors, including sophisticated dining and slightly naughty entertainment. The ship also has a piercing and tattoo parlour if you get the urge to get pierced or inked.

The cruise line aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. They have incorporated new tech to help them get there, including the Climeon units that use the heat from the ship to generate electricity on boards. The line has also invested in carbon offset and emission-reducing technology to provide alternative fuel options in the future.
